A research proposal has a standard architecture, and knowing it in full before writing changes the nature of the task. Instead of facing a blank document and an open question about what to say, you face a defined set of subsections each of which answers a specific question. Writing then becomes filling a structure with argued content, which is difficult in a manageable way, rather than inventing a structure while also inventing the content, which is difficult in an unmanageable way.
The structure is not arbitrary. It follows the logic of an argument: here is a problem worth solving, here is what is already known about it and where that knowledge stops, here is how I will produce new evidence, here is what the evidence shows, and here is what follows. Each chapter earns its place because the next one cannot be understood without it, which is why chapters cannot be reordered and why a proposal missing one is not shorter but broken.
Two facts about the structure are worth stating immediately. First, the same skeleton serves the proposal and the final report, which means the work of structuring is done once. A proposal written into this architecture grows into the report rather than being replaced by it. Second, the chapters are not written in the order they are read: the abstract is written last, the introduction is revised after the literature review is complete, and the conclusion is drafted before the discussion is polished. This framework sets out the full skeleton, what each subsection must contain, how long each should be, the order in which to write them, and the structural failures that examiners look for. It is my own synthesis, written in my own words and grounded in recognized scholarship.
The proposal runs from an abstract through five numbered chapters to the references. Below is the shape at chapter level; the next section opens each chapter into its subsections.
The abstract stands outside the numbering because it is not part of the argument but a compressed image of it: the problem, the approach, and the expected contribution in a single paragraph. Chapter one, the introduction, establishes that there is a problem worth studying and states precisely what the study will do about it. It is the chapter most read and least often written well, because it must be simultaneously broad enough to bring in a reader who does not know the field and specific enough to commit to an exact question.
Chapter two, the literature review, establishes what is already known and where the knowledge stops. It is the longest chapter in most proposals and it carries the weight of justifying that the gap is real rather than asserted. Chapter three, the methodology, explains how new evidence will be produced and why that way rather than another. It is the chapter examiners probe most aggressively, because it is where a study's credibility is decided.
Chapter four, results and discussion, presents what the evidence shows and then interprets it. In a proposal written before data collection this chapter states what results are expected and how they will be presented and analyzed; in the final report it carries the actual findings. Chapter five, conclusion and recommendations, answers the question asked in chapter one, states what follows for practice and for research, and acknowledges what the study could not settle. The references and appendices then provide the trail back to every source and the supporting material too detailed for the body.
Notice the symmetry. Chapter one asks a question and chapter five answers it. Chapter two says what was known and chapter four says what is now known. Chapter three sits in the middle as the mechanism that converts the first pair into the second. A proposal in which chapter five answers a different question from the one chapter one asked has a structural fault that no amount of good writing conceals, and checking that pairing is the fastest structural review you can run on your own draft.
Below the chapter level the structure becomes fully specified. Each subsection answers one question, and knowing that question is what lets you tell whether a subsection is finished.
| Subsection | The question it answers |
|---|---|
| 1.1 Overview and background | What is the wider situation this problem sits in? |
| 1.2 Problem statement | What specifically is wrong, unknown, or unresolved? |
| 1.2.1 Research question | What exactly will this study answer? |
| 1.2.2 Research aim | What is the overall purpose, in one sentence? |
| 1.2.3 Research objectives | What specific steps will achieve that aim? |
| 1.3 Significance of the project | Who benefits, and how, if this is answered? |
| 2.1 Introduction | How is this review organized, and why that way? |
| 2.2 Search strategy | How were the sources found, and could I repeat it? |
| 2.3 Synthesis of existing literature | What does the body of work collectively say? |
| 2.4 Evaluation of solutions | What has been tried, and how well did it work? |
| 2.5 Identification of gaps | What has not been adequately addressed? |
| 2.6 Conclusion | What does the review establish for this study? |
| 3.1 Research design | What kind of study is this, and why that kind? |
| 3.2 Data collection | What data, from whom, gathered how? |
| 3.3 Data analysis | How will the data be turned into findings? |
| 3.4 Constraints and limitations | What boundaries does this design impose? |
| 3.5 Ethical considerations | What risks exist, and what protects against them? |
| 4.1 Introduction | What is presented in this chapter and in what order? |
| 4.2 Results | What did the evidence show, without interpretation? |
| 4.3 Synthesis and discussion | What does it mean against the literature? |
| 5.1 Conclusion | What is the answer to the research question? |
| 5.2 Recommendations | What should be done, and what should be studied next? |
Three structural relationships inside this list carry most of the weight. The problem to question to aim to objectives chain in chapter one must descend cleanly: the problem is the situation, the question is what you will answer about it, the aim is the purpose in one sentence, and the objectives are the specific steps that reach it. Students frequently write these four as four rephrasings of the same sentence, which is the commonest structural fault in submitted chapter ones and is visible instantly to a reader who reads them consecutively.
The gap to method link connects 2.5 to 3.1. The gap identified at the end of the literature review is the thing the methodology must be designed to fill, and if the design would not fill the stated gap, one of the two is wrong. Reading 2.5 and 3.1 together, ignoring everything between, is the second-fastest structural check available.
The objectives to results link connects 1.2.3 to 4.2. Every objective stated in chapter one should have a visible destination in the results, and every result should trace back to an objective. A results section containing findings no objective asked for suggests the study drifted; an objective with no corresponding result suggests it was abandoned. Both are recoverable if noticed in draft and damaging if noticed by an examiner.
Proportion is a quality signal in itself. A reader who has not yet read a word can tell a great deal from the table of contents, and disproportion almost always indicates the same underlying problem: the writer wrote most about what they found easiest.
For a proposal in the region of twenty-five to thirty pages, a defensible distribution places the introduction at roughly fifteen percent, four to five pages. Longer than that usually means background has swollen at the expense of the problem statement. The literature review takes about thirty-five percent, nine to eleven pages, and it is legitimately the largest chapter because it carries the burden of establishing the gap. The methodology takes about twenty-five percent, six to eight pages, and this is the proportion students most often undershoot: a methodology chapter of three pages in a thirty-page proposal signals that choices were named rather than argued.
Results and discussion take about fifteen percent in a proposal, since results are expected rather than obtained, and expand substantially in the final report where they may become the largest chapter. Conclusion and recommendations take about ten percent, two to three pages, and should be shorter than writers expect: a conclusion that introduces new material is not a conclusion. References and appendices sit outside the page count in most conventions, which is worth confirming rather than assuming.
Two disproportions are diagnostic. A background section longer than the problem statement means the writer is more comfortable describing the context than committing to a claim, and the fix is not to cut the background but to write the problem statement properly and let it earn its space. A literature review that is a chain of paper summaries is usually the right length and the wrong shape: the length is filled by describing sources one at a time instead of synthesizing them by theme, and it will read as long regardless of its page count.
The practical use of proportion is as a planning tool. Convert the percentages into page targets on day one and write them into the empty document beside each heading. A section that is running to double its target is telling you something while there is still time to act, whereas the same information discovered at submission is merely a regret.
The reading order and the writing order are different, and following the reading order is one of the most reliable ways to waste weeks. The efficient sequence writes each part when the information it needs already exists.
Write the methodology first in draft, immediately after the topic is fixed. This is counterintuitive and it works, because the methodology is the part you can write without having finished reading, and drafting it early exposes feasibility problems while there is still time to change direction. A methodology drafted in week three is usually wrong in interesting ways, and every wrongness it reveals is a discovery that would otherwise have arrived in month five.
Then write the literature review, since it is the longest and its output, the gap, is required by everything else. Then revisit the methodology, because the gap you actually established is rarely identical to the one you expected, and the design must now fill the real one. Then write the introduction, which is the third counterintuitive move: the introduction can only be written properly once you know what the study turned out to be, and writing it first produces a chapter that has to be rewritten anyway.
Then write results, then discussion, then conclusion. Then write the abstract last, when the study is finished and the abstract can describe what exists rather than what was planned. Then revise the introduction again against the finished conclusion, closing the loop between the question asked and the question answered. This final revision takes an hour and prevents the most common structural criticism in examiner reports.
Two habits support the sequence. Keep a running decisions log from the first week recording each significant choice and its reason, so that the methodology chapter is transcription rather than reconstruction. And write badly on purpose in first drafts: get the argument onto the page in whatever prose comes, because the structural problems are visible in a rough complete draft and invisible in a polished partial one. Most students polish paragraph one to publication standard while chapters three and five do not exist, which is the exact inverse of the order in which problems should be found.
