Overview

Paradigm: Interpretivism
Core claim: Social reality is built from meaning and must be understood from within
Typical methods: Interviews, ethnography, case study, thematic analysis
Level: Doctoral research philosophy
By: Saif Alghamdi

Interpretivism is the paradigm built on a single powerful conviction: that studying human beings is fundamentally unlike studying atoms or planets, because people act on the basis of meanings, and those meanings cannot be measured from the outside but must be understood from within. Where positivism seeks general laws that explain and predict, interpretivism seeks rich understanding of how people make sense of their world and why, from their own point of view, they act as they do.

The paradigm rests on the observation that human action is not mere behaviour but meaningful behaviour. A wink is not the same as a blink, even though the physical movement is identical, because a wink carries meaning that a blink does not. To understand a wink you must grasp the shared conventions that make it meaningful, and no amount of precise measurement of eyelid velocity will ever capture that. Human social life is woven through with such meanings, and interpretivism holds that a research approach which ignores them, treating people as if they were objects obeying laws, misses the very thing that makes them human.

For a doctoral researcher, interpretivism is the natural home of a whole family of qualitative approaches. If a study asks how people experience something, what a situation means to those living it, or how a group constructs its shared understanding, it is almost certainly working within interpretivist assumptions, and those assumptions should be stated and defended rather than left implicit or, worse, judged by positivist standards they were never meant to meet.

This framework sets out the worldview interpretivism starts from, its intellectual roots in the idea of understanding, its assumptions across ontology, epistemology, and axiology, its characteristic methods, the distinctive criteria by which its rigour is judged, and its strengths and limits. It is my own synthesis, written in my own words and grounded in recognized scholarship.

Note: Interpretivism does not reject rigour; it redefines it. The goal is not measurement and generalization but faithful, deep, well-evidenced understanding of meaning, judged by standards suited to that goal rather than borrowed from the natural sciences.

Two

The Idea of Understanding

Interpretivism grows from a tradition that insisted, against the confidence of positivism, that the human sciences need a method of their own. Its central idea has a name, and knowing that name clarifies the whole paradigm.

The key concept is Verstehen, a German word meaning understanding, but understanding of a particular kind: grasping the meaning of an action from the inside, as the person performing it understands it. The thinker most associated with bringing this into social science is Max Weber, who argued that sociology must do more than observe regularities in behaviour; it must interpret the subjective meanings that people attach to their actions, because those meanings are part of what causes the action. To explain why a person prays, votes, or resigns, it is not enough to correlate external variables; one must understand what the act means to them. This is a different kind of explanation from the causal laws of physics, and Weber insisted it was proper to the study of human beings.

Behind Weber lay a longer argument, often called the methods dispute, in which thinkers such as Wilhelm Dilthey distinguished the natural sciences, which aim to explain nature by external laws, from the human sciences, which aim to understand meaning from within. Later currents deepened the tradition: phenomenology, which studies the structures of lived experience; hermeneutics, the theory of interpretation, originally of texts and then of action; and symbolic interactionism, which studies how shared meanings arise and are sustained in everyday interaction. These are not the same, but they share the interpretivist conviction that meaning is the proper object of social inquiry and that understanding, not measurement, is the proper method.

Note: Verstehen is the heart of interpretivism. To understand a human action is to grasp what it means to the person doing it, which is a different achievement from measuring it or subsuming it under a law.

Three

Its Three Assumptions

Interpretivism answers the three philosophical questions in ways that stand almost point for point against positivism, and stating them clearly is what a qualitative methodology chapter needs to justify its whole design.

Ontology (reality)الأنطولوجيا (الواقع)social reality is constructed through shared meaning; multiple realitiesالواقع الاجتماعي يُبنى عبر المعنى المشترك؛ وقائع متعددة
Epistemology (knowledge)الإبستمولوجيا (المعرفة)knowledge comes from understanding meanings from withinالمعرفة تأتي من فهم المعاني من الداخل
Axiology (values)الأكسيولوجيا (القيم)research is value-laden; the researcher's position matters and is made explicitالبحث محمّلٌ بالقيم؛ موقع الباحث يهمّ ويُعلَن

Ontologically, interpretivism holds that social reality is not a fixed external object but something people construct together through shared meanings, language, and interaction. Because different groups and individuals can construct different understandings, there are multiple socially constructed realities rather than one, and the researcher's task is not to measure the single true one but to understand these constructions. Epistemologically, it follows that knowledge cannot be gained by detached measurement from outside; it requires getting close, entering the world of the people studied, and interpreting their meanings, so the researcher is an instrument of understanding rather than a neutral recorder. The knower and the known are connected, not separate.

Axiologically, interpretivism embraces what positivism tries to eliminate. Since the researcher's own background and perspective inevitably shape their interpretation, the honest response is not to pretend neutrality but to practise reflexivity, examining and declaring one's position and its likely influence on the reading. And because interpretivist research usually begins with rich data rather than a fixed hypothesis, its reasoning tends to be inductive: patterns, concepts, and theory emerge from close engagement with the data rather than being imposed on it in advance. Together these assumptions form a chain as coherent as the positivist one, but pointing in the opposite direction.

Note: In interpretivism the researcher is the main instrument. Because understanding meaning requires human interpretation, the researcher's sensitivity, closeness, and self-awareness are methodological tools, not sources of contamination to be removed.

Four

Characteristic Methods

Interpretivist assumptions call for methods that get close to people and preserve the richness of meaning rather than reducing it to numbers. The toolkit is qualitative, and each method is a different way of accessing how people understand their world.

The in-depth interview is the workhorse of interpretivist research, because it lets the researcher explore, in the participant's own words, how they experience and make sense of a situation, following meaning wherever it leads rather than forcing it into pre-set categories. Ethnography goes further into context, immersing the researcher in a setting over time so they can observe meaning as it is enacted in everyday life, not just as it is reported in an interview. Case study examines a single instance, an organization, an event, a person, in depth and in context, seeking understanding of the particular rather than generalization across many. And the analysis of documents, narratives, and language treats the texts people produce as windows into shared meaning.

What these methods have in common is the priority of depth over breadth and of meaning over measurement. Samples are typically small and chosen purposively, because the aim is not statistical representativeness but access to informative cases; a handful of rich, well-understood accounts is worth more, for this purpose, than a thousand shallow ones. Analysis, correspondingly, works by interpretation: reading and re-reading the data, identifying themes and patterns of meaning, and building an account that is faithful to how participants understand their world. Approaches such as thematic analysis and grounded theory give this interpretive work systematic structure, so that it is disciplined and transparent rather than merely impressionistic.

Note: Small purposive samples are a feature, not a flaw. Interpretivism seeks depth of understanding in informative cases, so judging its sample size by survey standards mistakes what the research is trying to do.

Five

Judging Rigour, and Limits

Because interpretivism does not seek objective measurement, it cannot be judged by validity, reliability, and generalization in the positivist sense. It has its own well-developed criteria of quality, and a strong qualitative study makes them explicit.

The most widely used framework speaks of trustworthiness, with four components. Credibility asks whether the findings are believable and faithful to participants' realities, supported by techniques such as member checking, where participants confirm the researcher's interpretation, and triangulation across sources. Transferability, which replaces generalization, asks whether findings could apply to other settings, and is supported by rich, thick description that lets a reader judge the fit to their own context. Dependability asks whether the process is consistent and well documented, so another researcher could follow the trail. And confirmability asks whether the findings are grounded in the data rather than the researcher's bias, supported by reflexivity and a clear audit trail. These criteria hold interpretivist work to a real and demanding standard, one designed for understanding rather than measurement.

  • Credibility: are the findings believable and true to participants' realities?
  • Transferability: could the findings inform other settings, judged through thick description?
  • Dependability: is the process consistent, documented, and traceable?
  • Confirmability: are the findings grounded in data, not the researcher's bias?

The paradigm's limits follow from its strengths. Because samples are small and purposive, interpretivist findings do not generalize statistically, and offering deep understanding of particular cases rather than broad laws. Because the researcher is the instrument, the approach depends heavily on their skill and self-awareness, and critics worry about subjectivity, though reflexivity and systematic method are the disciplined response to that worry. And interpretivist work is labour-intensive and hard to scale. None of this is a defect when the research question is about meaning; it is simply the cost of a paradigm that refuses to reduce human experience to numbers. The honest guidance is to choose interpretivism when your question is genuinely about how people understand and experience their world, and then to hold the work to its own rigorous standards rather than apologizing for failing to meet positivist ones.

Bottom line: interpretivism studies meaning from within, using qualitative methods to reach deep understanding rather than measurement. Judge it by trustworthiness, not by validity and generalization, and choose it whenever your question is about what something means to the people who live it.
