Overview

Traditions: Feminist and postcolonial research
Shared question: Whose knowledge counts as knowledge, and who decided?
Key ideas: Standpoint, situated knowledge, intersectionality, epistemic decolonization
Level: Doctoral critical methodology
By: Saif Alghamdi

Feminist and postcolonial research are two traditions with one shared insight: that the apparently neutral machinery of research, its questions, categories, methods, and standards of validity, was built by particular people in particular places, and carries their vantage point inside it. Neither tradition is a method; both are commitments that reshape every methodological decision, from what counts as a researchable problem to who has authority over the interpretation.

These traditions extend the critical paradigm this portal treats elsewhere, but with sharper focus. Where critical theory asks how power shapes society, feminist and postcolonial scholarship ask how power shaped the discipline studying it: how women's experience became a special topic while men's became the human default, and how European experience became theory while everywhere else became case studies. That charge is not rhetorical, it is empirical and documentable, and once seen it changes what a researcher notices in their own literature review.

For a doctoral researcher these traditions matter in three ways. As a paradigm, when the study's whole justification is that existing knowledge silences the people it describes. As a corrective, applicable inside otherwise conventional studies that want to avoid inherited blind spots in sampling, instruments, and interpretation. And as a set of methodological innovations, reflexivity, participatory design, and reciprocity, that have moved from these traditions into mainstream practice. This framework covers standpoint theory and situated knowledge, intersectionality, the postcolonial critique and decolonizing methodologies, what changes in practice, and the internal debates, with a worked example. It is my own synthesis, written in my own words and grounded in recognized scholarship.

Note: The founding move of both traditions is to make the researcher's own position part of the analysis rather than the invisible frame around it, which is a claim about rigour, not a retreat from it.

Two

Standpoint and Situated Knowledge

Feminist epistemology's central contribution is standpoint theory, and it makes a claim stronger and more interesting than the one usually attributed to it: not that all perspectives are equally valid, but that some social positions afford better views of certain realities than others.

The argument runs in three steps. First, all knowledge is produced from somewhere: the questions a researcher finds worth asking, the categories that seem natural, the explanations that feel satisfying, all reflect a social location. Second, dominant positions have a characteristic blindness, because those advantaged by an arrangement rarely need to understand how it works, while those disadvantaged by it must understand it to survive within it, which gives the subordinate position an epistemic advantage regarding the workings of that arrangement. A worker knows things about a workplace that its executives do not, not because workers are wiser but because the arrangement makes that knowledge necessary for them and optional for the executive. Third, this advantage is not automatic: a standpoint is an achievement, developed through critical reflection on experience, not simply possessed by virtue of identity, which is the point most often lost in casual summaries.

Donna Haraway's parallel argument about situated knowledge names the alternative to two failed options. The first is the god trick, the pretense of seeing everything from nowhere, the disembodied objectivity that hides its position while claiming universality. The second is relativism, the abandonment of any grounds for preferring one account to another, which Haraway argues is the god trick's mirror image, since both refuse accountability for a specific location. Situated knowledge takes the third path: every account comes from a position, that position is declared, and accounts are then judged partly by how well they account for their own conditions of production. This underwrites what feminist philosophers of science call strong objectivity, the claim that a method which examines the researcher's assumptions produces more reliable knowledge than one that leaves them unexamined, so declaring position is a strengthening of rigour rather than a confession of bias.

Note: Standpoint is earned, not owned. Belonging to a group does not by itself grant its standpoint, and a researcher's task is engagement with those positions, not the assumption of them.

Three

Intersectionality and the Postcolonial Critique

Two developments corrected these traditions from within, and both are now indispensable analytic tools rather than optional additions.

Intersectionality, named by Kimberle Crenshaw from her analysis of anti-discrimination law, began as a precise observation: courts treated race and sex as separate categories, so a Black woman whose treatment could not be shown to match either the experience of Black men or that of white women fell through the analytical gap entirely. The general principle follows: social positions are not additive layers but interlocking systems that produce distinct experiences at their intersections, so a study that treats gender, class, race, nationality, and disability as separable variables will systematically misdescribe the people located at their crossings. The methodological consequence is concrete: disaggregate rather than average, sample for intersections rather than for single-axis representativeness, resist the main-effects habit of asking about gender while holding everything else constant, and treat the categories themselves as historically produced rather than natural.

The postcolonial critique extends the same logic to geography and history. Its core charge is that dominant social science universalized a provincial experience: theories developed in a handful of Western societies were presented as theories of human behaviour, while research conducted elsewhere was received as local, cultural, or applied. Edward Said's analysis of orientalism showed how scholarship itself participated in producing the difference it claimed merely to describe, and later work extended the argument to research practice: extractive fieldwork that takes data from communities and returns nothing, citation patterns that route legitimacy through Northern journals, and development research whose categories presume a single path along which societies are ranked. Decolonizing methodologies, articulated forcefully by Linda Tuhiwai Smith from indigenous research experience, respond with concrete commitments: local ownership of research agendas, methods compatible with local ways of knowing, benefit returning to the researched community, and the right of communities to refuse.

Note: Both critiques land on the same practical question for a doctoral study: are the theories you imported developed on populations like the one you are studying, and if not, what does using them anyway assume?

Four

What Changes in Practice

These commitments are not a separate toolkit; they change how familiar methods are used, and the changes are specific enough to write into a methodology chapter as decisions with reasons.

The research question changes first: it is developed with the community concerned rather than for them where the tradition is followed seriously, and it is checked for whose problem it names, since a question framed as why do employees resist the system and one framed as what does the system cost the people asked to use it point at the same phenomenon while distributing blame differently before any data are collected. Sampling changes: intersections are sought rather than averaged away, and the people whose accounts are structurally least available, the informal workers, the excluded, the ones who left, are pursued rather than treated as hard to reach and quietly dropped. Instruments change: categories are examined for what they assume, translation is treated as conceptual rather than lexical work, and the possibility that a construct developed elsewhere simply does not exist in this setting is kept open rather than measured over.

The interview and the analysis change most visibly. Power in the interview is addressed, not just noted: sequence, setting, language choice, and the right to review or withdraw material are designed to reduce the asymmetry. Reflexivity moves from a paragraph to a practice, with a reflexive journal treated as data, and the researcher's position, gender, nationality, institutional affiliation, insider or outsider status, analyzed for what it made visible and what it likely closed off. Interpretation is checked against participants where possible, and where the researcher's reading departs from theirs, the departure is argued rather than assumed. Writing changes too: quotations are contextualized rather than harvested as decoration, participants are described as people with agency rather than as instances of a category, and the study reports what it returned to the community, since reciprocity is the practical test of the whole commitment.

Note: Reflexivity is not confession. The test is analytic: state your position, then say specifically what it likely made easier to see and harder to see in this study, and what you did about the latter.

Internal Debates, and a Worked Example

These are living traditions with unresolved arguments, and a doctoral study that acknowledges them reads as scholarship rather than advocacy.

Four debates recur. The relativism question: if all knowledge is situated, on what grounds is one account better than another, answered by strong objectivity, that accounts examining their own conditions are more reliable, though critics find the answer incomplete. The representation question: can a researcher speak about people whose position they do not share, where the tradition's own answer, developed against both easy yes and easy no, is that one can speak with rather than for, with method and authority shared to the degree the design allows. The essentialism question: talking about women's or colonized people's knowledge risks reproducing the very fixed categories the traditions criticize, which intersectionality mitigates but does not dissolve. And the institutionalization question, sharpest in current debate: whether decolonization has become a metaphor deployed in Northern academic writing while the material relations of research funding, authorship, and access remain unchanged, a critique aimed precisely at studies that adopt the vocabulary without the commitments.

The worked example: a study of women's experience of career progression in a large Gulf engineering firm. Standpoint commitment: the research question is developed after preliminary conversations with women engineers, replacing the sponsor's original framing, why do women leave, with a question about what the progression system requires that it does not name. Intersectional design: participants are sampled across nationality and contract type as well as gender, because the experience of an expatriate engineer on a fixed contract, a national on a development track, and a support-function employee are structurally different, and averaging them would produce a description true of no one. Method: interviews with language choice left to participants, transcripts returned for review, and a reflexive journal analyzing the researcher's position as a male national employee of the same sector, including two moments where interviewees visibly edited themselves and how that shaped the account. Interpretation: participant checking on the themes, with one disputed reading reported as disputed rather than resolved by researcher authority. Reciprocity: findings returned in an accessible internal briefing negotiated with participants before the thesis was submitted, and the ethics section states what the study cost participants and what it gave back, which is the standard these traditions actually set.

Bottom line: feminist and postcolonial research argue that knowledge is produced from positions, that some positions see certain realities better, and that examining the researcher's own position strengthens rather than weakens rigour. In practice this changes the question, the sampling, the instruments, the interview, the interpretation, and the writing, and its practical test is simple: who set the agenda, and what came back to those studied.
