This is a study guide to strategic marketing, distilled from a course that runs from the foundations of strategy through pricing, distribution, research, and firm resources.
Its central thread: a marketing strategy aligns the firm's resources and marketing mix with its target markets to build a durable competitive advantage and deliver superior value to the customer.
A strategy is the direction a firm takes to reach a desired long-term position. It has two elements: the objectives to be achieved (for example, raising international sales by 30% over a five-year plan) and the means to reach them (for example, opening plants and offices abroad instead of exporting). Objectives can be long-term or short-term, and financial or strategic. As Porter frames it, strategy is doing different activities from rivals, or the same activities in a different way.
Kotler defines marketing as the science and art of exploring, creating, and delivering value to satisfy a target market at a profit. Value is the benefit a customer gets for what they pay in money, effort, or time, and it has several forms: functional, emotional, social, and economic. Marketers identify target segments, uncover needs, study competitors, and set the right mix, including price.
A marketing strategy is a series of integrated actions that discover and support the firm's competitive advantage or create added value, by allocating the marketing mix to the target markets. It rests on segmentation, targeting, and positioning (STP): dividing the market into segments, choosing which segments to serve, and shaping a distinct position in the customer's mind.
The marketing mix is the set of controllable tools a firm blends to produce the response it wants from its target market. The classic mix is the 4 Ps:
The 4 Ps work as a system: they must be internally consistent and aligned with the chosen positioning, since a change in one P usually calls for adjustments in the others.
Because services are intangible, inseparable from their provider, variable in quality, and perishable, marketers add three more Ps:
Strategy answers a chain of questions: where are we now, where do we want to go, how will we get there, how do we allocate resources, how do we implement, and how do we compare results to the plan and correct deviations. It runs through three phases: planning, implementation, and control.
A competitive advantage is a capability the firm holds and outperforms rivals on, such as higher quality, better value at a lower price while keeping quality, or added benefits that justify a higher price.
A firm can build its advantage through one or more of these forces:
The key to successful pricing is to match the product with the consumer's perception of value. Price is what the customer sacrifices to gain the product's benefits, so pricing must start from customer value, not just cost.
A demand curve shows the relationship between price and quantity demanded. Most curves slope downward, but prestige products can slope upward, where a higher price signals status and can raise demand. Firms such as airlines use price elasticity to price tickets by how sensitive demand is to price.
Charging different prices for the same product based on the customer type, the time of day, week, or season, and the level of demand, for example lower student prices, higher summer airfares, or different restaurant prices at lunch and dinner.
Distribution, the "place" in the marketing mix, is about supply-chain and channel management, getting the product to the customer efficiently. IKEA is a benchmark: flat-pack furniture, low-cost packaging and shipping, and customer self-assembly all cut cost while adding value.
Wholesalers buy from manufacturers and resell to retailers. It can be hard to convince wholesalers and retailers to carry a new product.
Each participant adds value, and intermediaries reduce the total number of transactions, making the system more efficient and effective while helping meet delivery promises and customer expectations.
A firm can influence intermediaries through several sources of power: legitimate, information, expertise, referent, coercive, and reward power.
Marketing research turns questions about the market and customers into evidence for better decisions. It follows a five-step process.
External secondary sources include scanner data from firms such as IRI or Nielsen, which help a firm read what is happening in the marketplace.
A complete report includes an executive summary for senior management, the body (topic, method, and rationale), the conclusions from the analysis, the limitations, and appendices with tables and figures.
Three indicators tell whether a firm's strategy is succeeding: whether it is meeting its stated financial and strategic objectives, whether its financial performance is above the industry average, and whether it is winning customers and gaining market share.
A resource is a competitive asset the firm owns or controls. A capability (or competence) is the firm's ability to perform an internal activity proficiently by using those resources.
A resource bundle is an integrated set of competitive assets built around one or more cross-functional capabilities. To yield a sustainable advantage, a resource should pass the VRIN test: Valuable, Rare, Inimitable (hard to copy), and Non-substitutable.
