This is a study guide to strategic brand management, distilled from six course chapters based on Kevin Lane Keller's textbook.
It follows one clear thread: brand equity lives in the customer's mind, and everything a firm does should aim to build, measure, and manage it. The six chapters move from what a brand is, to how customer-based brand equity and positioning work, to the tools that create equity (brand elements and marketing programs), to how equity is measured, and finally to how it is grown through brand extensions.
According to the American Marketing Association, a brand is a name, term, sign, symbol, or design, or a combination of them, intended to identify one seller's goods or services and differentiate them from competitors. The word itself comes from the Old Norse brandr, "to burn," from the marks ranchers burned onto livestock to show ownership.
A product is anything offered to a market to satisfy a need or want, and it can be seen at five levels: the core benefit, the generic product, the expected product, the augmented product, and the potential product. A brand adds dimensions that differentiate it from other products meant to satisfy the same need. Those dimensions may be rational and tangible or symbolic and intangible, and they are built in the customer's mind from reputation, image, and a promise. Products can also be differentiated by packaging, services, customer advice, financing, delivery, and warehousing.
Brand elements are the devices that identify and distinguish a brand: name, logo, symbol, character, packaging, and slogan. They may be drawn from people, places, and things, or be entirely invented. Brand salience is how easily and how often a brand is recalled or noticed in a purchase situation; high salience puts a brand top-of-mind and makes it more likely to be chosen over rivals.
Customer-based brand equity (CBBE) is the differential effect that brand knowledge has on a customer's response to the marketing of that brand.
Brand knowledge is modeled as an associative network of nodes and links in the customer's memory. Marketers need insight into that network to see which associations a brand owns.
Equity comes from two sources working together:
Positioning is designing the firm's offer and image to occupy a distinctive, valued place in the target customer's mind, and it guides the whole marketing strategy. It is built by answering four questions:
A clear brand mantra keeps that positioning consistent across everything the brand does.
Brand elements (also called brand identities) are the trademarkable devices that identify and differentiate a brand. The "ability" of an element is what consumers would think or feel about the product if they knew only that element and nothing else. The main types are:
The first three criteria are "offensive," they build the brand. The last three are "defensive," they protect the equity held in the element.
The name is the most important brand element and the hardest to change, so it should be chosen carefully and systematically. Good names tend to be simple and easy to pronounce and spell, familiar and meaningful, and distinctive, which lifts brand awareness. As branding expert Lippincott advises, a name should be judged against the same six criteria of memorability, meaningfulness, likability, transferability, adaptability, and protectability.
Marketing programs, especially product, pricing, and channel strategies, are how firms build awareness, improve image, elicit positive responses, and deepen brand resonance. In an integrated marketing approach, all of these activities are coordinated so they reinforce, rather than subtract from, brand equity, judged on both efficiency and effectiveness.
Firms bring the brand closer to the individual through experiential marketing, one-to-one marketing, permission marketing, mass customization, relationship marketing, and aftermarketing, which focuses on the experience after the sale to encourage repeat purchase.
Advertising strategies to convey value include generic claims, preemptive claims, the unique selling proposition, hyperbole, and comparative advertising.
To measure the sources of brand equity, brand managers must understand two things: how consumers shop for and use products and services, and what consumers know, think, and feel about brands, that is, the customer mindset. This is hard because those beliefs and feelings often exist only in consumers' minds and are difficult to put into words.
These map the depth and richness of brand associations:
Qualitative data are flexible and deep, but subjective, and must be coded before they are useful.
Numerical rating scales and rankings measure brand awareness (recognition and recall), brand image, brand responses (judgments and feelings), and relationships (resonance and loyalty).
A brand extension uses an established brand name to launch a product in the same category (a line extension) or in a different category (a category extension). Extensions play a role in creating, maintaining, and enhancing brand equity, and they have grown because launching new brands is costly and firms want to leverage their existing brand investment.
Consumers judge an extension mainly by its perceived fit with the parent brand. An extension succeeds when salient, positive parent associations transfer to the new product and add value, and when the extension in turn reinforces the parent.
