About This Summary

Book: Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don't
Author: Jeffrey Pfeffer
First published: 2010
Field: Organizational behavior & leadership
Summary by: Saif Alghamdi

Power is Jeffrey Pfeffer's clear-eyed, sometimes uncomfortable account of how influence actually works inside organizations. A Stanford professor of organizational behavior, Pfeffer argues that power is not handed to the most deserving, but built by those who understand its dynamics and are willing to act on them, and that this is a skill anyone can learn.

This page is my own summary and reflection on the book's argument, with all credit for the ideas belonging to the author. It is not a reproduction of the text, and readers who want the full, evidence-backed treatment should read the original.

The book matters because it punctures a comforting myth: that if you simply do good work, recognition and advancement will follow. Pfeffer marshals research to argue that this is often false, that performance alone rarely secures a position, and that people who rise usually do specific, learnable things that others neglect. Whether one finds this bracing or cynical, understanding how power really operates is useful, if only to protect oneself from those who already understand it.

Note: This is a summary and reflection, not the book itself. The ideas and research belong to Jeffrey Pfeffer; the words here are mine, offered as an honest account of a deliberately unsentimental argument.

Two

The Core Ideas

The book's argument is built from research on how careers actually unfold, and it centers on a few ideas that run against common belief about merit and advancement.

The foundational claim is that performance is necessary but not sufficient. Doing good work matters, but Pfeffer shows that it rarely translates automatically into power, because those who decide promotions are influenced by visibility, relationships, and perception at least as much as by results. From this follows his central practical point: those who rise take deliberate steps that others, believing merit will speak for itself, fail to take. They make their work visible, build networks of useful relationships, and manage how they are perceived.

  • Performance is not enough: good work rarely secures power on its own, because decisions turn on more than results.
  • Get noticed: making your contributions visible to the right people matters as much as making them.
  • Build networks: relationships, especially with the powerful, are a primary source of influence.
  • Manage perception: how you are seen, your reputation and demeanor, shapes the power others grant you.

Pfeffer also argues that certain personal qualities can be developed to build power, among them ambition, energy, focus, and a capacity to tolerate conflict, and that these often matter more than raw talent. He is candid that power-seeking can involve behavior many find distasteful, and he does not moralize about it; his aim is to describe the world as it is rather than as it should be. The reader is left to decide how far to act on the description, but is at least no longer naive about the rules of the game.

Note: Pfeffer's uncomfortable core is that merit does not speak for itself. Those who advance make themselves visible, build relationships, and manage perception deliberately, while those who wait to be noticed for good work often wait a long time.

Reflection & Critique

A fair summary weighs the book honestly, because its unsentimental realism is both its strength and the source of legitimate unease.

The book's value is its bracing honesty about how organizations really work. It corrects a naive and widely held belief, that good work alone earns advancement, and it does so with research rather than mere assertion. Its practical advice, make your work visible, invest in relationships, manage how you are perceived, is sound and useful, and not inherently unethical: being noticed for genuine contribution and building real relationships are legitimate parts of professional life. For anyone who has watched a less capable colleague advance faster, the book offers a clarifying explanation.

The fair concern is that a purely instrumental view of power, detached from any purpose it serves, can slide into manipulation, and Pfeffer's refusal to moralize can read as endorsement. The honest way to use the book is to take its accurate description of how influence works, and to apply it in service of good ends and with integrity, using its insights to be effective and to protect oneself, without adopting the cynicism that treats every relationship as a lever. Understood that way, it makes a person wiser about organizational life without making them worse.

Bottom line: Power is a clear-eyed account of how influence really works: performance is not enough, and those who rise make themselves visible, build relationships, and manage perception, insights best used with integrity and in service of worthwhile ends.
